How do you get people to do things that are actually good for them? That’s the question marketing strategists Graceann Bennett and Freya Williams set out to answer in their recent research study, Mainstream Green: Moving Sustainability from Niche to Normal. Their research focused on mainstream behaviors around sustainability, but what they learned has application to many behavior change fields, including healthy eating and food policy. The answer? The power of social norms and our fundamental human need to belong override logic, reason and morals most of the time. In this talk, Graceann and Freya explain why succeeding in motivating the mainstream to do what’s good for them will require a radically new approach.
Sometimes it is hard to motivate yourself. Especially when everybody around you tells you “times are tough”, “the world is in a crisis”, “young people won’t find jobs”, like in this article from businessweek.com:
“For people just starting their careers, the damage may be deep and long-lasting, potentially creating a kind of “lost generation.” Studies suggest that an extended period of youthful joblessness can significantly depress lifetime income as people get stuck in jobs that are beneath their capabilities, or come to be seen by employers as damaged goods.”
Don’t believe this! Don’t let anybody put such barriers in front of you!
It reminds me of this great poem by Jonathan Reed:
“I am part of a lost generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within.”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy.”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
is more important than
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
but this will not be true in my era
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.
And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it.”
Here is where the magic is happening. If you feel there is a mistake and look at the generation of people that are now 40+ and think those are the real Lost Generation, because they forgot to live and only have their job and making tons of money on their mind, I suggest you read the above poem in reverse and decide for yourself who the real Lost Generation is!
I have been through many tough times and I know now, the circumstances don’t matter if you believe in yourself and take charge of your life and thinking. It is in your power to change it!
